History of Tamil Nadu

It is generally accepted that Dravidians were part of early Indus Valley settlers who moved southwards to avoid bloody conflicts with the invading Aryans around 1500 BC. The recorded history of Tamil Nadu can be traced back to 4th Century BC. Due to its strategic position and proximity to the Arabian Sea, Tamil Nadu remained a bone of contention between several powerful dynasties like the Cholas, Pandyas, Nayaks, Pallavas, Chalukyas, Cheras and the British.

Most of the rulers provided patronage to Dravidian culture and expanded it beyond the borders of tamilnadu tour. Chola and Pallava dynasties have been the most powerful ones in South India who ruled the region for 500 and 400 years respectively.

Tamil Nadu witnessed colonial struggle when the British fought wars with Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan in nineteenth century and consolidated South India into Madras Presidency. After independence in 1947, Madras Presidency was renamed as Madras State and in 1968 it was renamed once again as Tamil Nadu.
